Priming your roof is an excellent idea ahead of polymer roof installation, for a whole range of reasons - some obvious, some less so.
Let's do a quick dive using Polyroof's excellent summary here>
- Enhanced adhesion: This one's probably obvious. Priming on any surface usually improves the adhesion of whatever is being applied - and polymer roofing is no different. Ensuring a base layer that the subsequent layer 'likes' gives far greater opportunities for two materials to stick to one another, and stay stuck.
- Reduced risk of pinholes: Uneven surfaces can result in uneven 'curing', which can trap air, causing bubbling and moisture release and compromising the main waterproofing layer. Priming evens everything out, preventing this ever happening.
- Protecting the upper polymer layer from a deteriorating substrate: Polymer roofing is often applied over materials that will deteriorate over time, for example bitumen. Throughout the polymer membrane's lifespan, priming helps to create a stable barrier between the two materials - so the upper layer isn't compromised as the lower substrate degrades.
- Better coverage: One that everyone wants! Proper priming ensures polymer material isn't absorbed into the substrate (or lost from it) - meaning more bang for your buck!
- An improved finish: Aesthetically, priming makes for a smoother, more even finish that looks spectacular.
So there we have it: Five reasons you should invest in priming!
