5 Top Tips: When to Call the Roofing Professionals

Wed, 30/09/2015

Roofing has a reputation for being expensive so it's no surprise some people try to put off roofing problems or fix them themselves. While there are many repairs a reasonably handy person can take care of, there are also some situations where a professional contractor is a really good idea (and rest assured, our polymer roofing system is actually much more affordable than you might think!).

Here are our Top 5 Tips for recognising when to call the roofing professionals:

1. When the roof (or suspected problem area of the roof) is hard to access either due to height or other factors, call someone. We are fully insured, experienced and conform to all industry health and safety standards. Your roof is not worth your life! If possible, when assessing your roof for problems, use binoculars and check from a safe ground-level area (such as a hillock or bank)

2. Moisture and/or mould in your loftspace is a sign all may not right with your roof. If the area is safe, a visual inspection will confirm whether there is water ingress and roughly where (always check the decking immediately beneath the roof for water stains, if you can reach it). It may not, however, tell you exactly how big your problem is - if water has 'wicked' into woodwork or concrete, the problem can be much bigger than it looks, so always call a roofer with this one.

3. Rusted, cracked or worn flashings are best replaced by an experienced roofing professional. Botch jobs can make the problem worse and result in thousands of pounds worth of water damage to chimney breasts and other features. Flashings are cheap! It is better to have it done right and save yourself paying out much, much more later.

4. If your roof has curled, buckled or missing shingles you need to call the roofers out. If you can see black granules in your gutters, this is a sign your shingles have reached the end of their lifespan.

5. When your roof is getting old. Most modern roofs last no longer than around 25 years so find out how long yours has left and keep an eye on it if it's more than 20 years old. It may sound obvious but the problems will certainly begin to mount at some point and only you can determine whether it is better to invest in a new roof or keep muddling through with repairs on the one you already have.
