There's an idea we come across surprisingly often that GRP roofs cannot be refurbished - that it all has to be torn out and started again from scratch. We can tell you right now that this isn't true.
This GRP roof in Cardigan (Aberteifi), West Wales, was holding water, creating pooling that over time would seriously undermine the safety and structure of the roof. However, we were able to fully refurbish it, without ripping out the existing GRP and decking - saving a LOT of extra cost, as well as reducing waste and new materials.
Firstly, the entire roof was pressure washed with a commercial pressure washer. We then used an orbital sander and grinder to thoroughly remove stalks and wicks, and the existing lapped GRP matting that was obstructing water flow.
When that was completed, our special self-leveling resin mortar was poured, and a screeding level dragged over the roof, pulling the resin leveling mortar over the defections to fill out, smooth and create unimpeded flow.
This was then sanded and re-checked with a straight edge, looking for minute gaps. The whole was then re-screeded with a less viscous mix of leveling resin mortar.
We then laid the Protec 20 year Fibreglass Reinforced system, as well as the GRP matting, following the 'fall' of the refurbished roof.
Finally, we re-sanded the roof and applied a top coat to give a superior 'better-than-new' finish.
The puddles and ponding was totally eliminated, with as much material as possible salvaged from the existing roof - saving money as well as resources and the environment.
