This unusual project provides both a usable basement and a ground floor walkway for a large new-build property in Tregaron, near Lampeter in West Wales (SY25, Ceredigion) - using the cellar roof as the walkway.
Basement tanking or cellar tanking refers to the use of waterproof barriers either inside or outside (in this case inside and over the roof area) to make the basement or cellar dry and habitable. It's one type (among many) of basement waterproofing.
This project employed both tanking and other forms of waterproofing.
As can be seen in the second picture, we worked with a 'Beam and Block' structure, installing the waterproof polymer system over the top. The work also included a Vapour Layer, to keep the basement dry by preventing water ingress from above (a building would usually prevent this ingress, but this roof is 'open' to rain, sun, snow, ice etc).
The polymer system is jointless and seamless, and doesn't crack or flake, so the basement roof is now fully sealed from the elements.
We also utilised Thermally Broken Insulation - an energy efficient method/technique in which insulation is placed strategically between the most heat-conductive parts of a structure. This prevents heat being transferred where it is actually likely to be lost, rather than everywhere (which is a less cost-efficient and less environmentally-efficient approach). This has a side-advantage of helping to prevent mould.
