First up, what is basement tanking, and how does it differ from basement waterproofing?
The simple answer is - basement waterproofing refers to all the ways in which basements or cellars can be made more waterproof. This includes sealants/sealers, exterior or interior coating, foundation crack injections, exterior or interior drainage, French drains and sump pumps. In contrast, basement tanking, also called cellar tanking, refers to a particular type of waterproofing, namely the use of waterproof barriers either inside or outside to make the basement or cellar dry and habitable.
How do basement tanking and basement waterproofing work with the polymer roofing system?
Polymer roofing uses jointless, seamless plastic membrane technology (the industry is one of the very few reusing spent plastic polymer particles, keeping them out of seas and soil). Its encapsulating 'perfect-forming' nature means there simply is no route for water ingress.
This means it can be used for basement tanking as well as for other types of cellar waterproofing. Basement rooms can be fully coated in the system, internally or externally, whilst also providing additional layers and sealant options.
Can I see an example?
Yes! This newbuild basement tanking project in West Wales involved both tanking and other cellar waterproofing, creating a habitable cellar and a ground-level exterior walkway - with the cellar roof forming the walkway outside the main building (rather than internally). Work included a vapour layer and 'thermally broken insulation', which also helps to prevent mould.
