The Plastic Problem and Recycled Polymer Roofing

Tue, 29/01/2019

It is thought there are already more than five trillion pieces of plastic in the world's oceans and another 8 million tonnes joins them every year. Plastic is designed to last. This can't go on - as a species we have to find more ways to reuse the plastic we already have.

People are waking up to the scale of the Plastic Problem - the billions of tonnes of plastic waste now accumulating either in landfill or in the oceans, polluting land and water resources, creating "plastic islands' in the seas, trapping and strangling wildlife. Whales and birds starve because their stomachs are full of plastic so there is no room for food.

Plastic is created using fossil fuels such as coal and oil and is designed to last, not biodegrade. Some plastic types, such as polythene, do partially break down into minute polymer particles, which are washed into the soil, rivers and seas by rainfall and ultimately ingested by fish, small mammals and us, via 83% of the world's drinking water (more about this) and nearly all bottled water sources (more about this), causing serious environmental and public health concerns.

Clearly, we need to find a way to reduce our dependence on plastic and to reuse and recycle the plastics that are already out there.

Shockingly, very few industries are doing so.

The polymer roofing industry is one of the few industries currently reusing plastic polymers. The polymers are harvested, treated and reformed into a workable roofing solution that has all the benefits of plastic (long lasting, strong, flexible, waterproof, versatile, customisable, insulative, cheap to produce, resistant to microbes and pests, etc) AND prevents plastic polymers being washed into water sources and biaccumulating in Earth's ecosystems.

All this and the roofs themselves are excellent roofs - high spec, quick to install and affordable. They are strong enough to support living turf roofs, adhere to nearly any substrate, are "perfect forming" around details, and can include various other additions to create anti-skid surfaces (for balconies) and theft proof lead and copper look roofs.

Take a look around the site to see for yourself how good these roofs are. There are numerous "portfolios" too, so you can see projects in action and view the final roofs, as well as technical data and specifications.
