Fibreglass GRP Flat Roof Leaking

Wed, 29/05/2019

Fibreglass/GRP is among the most popular materials for flat roofing in the UK, mostly because it's considered affordable, tough and reasonably long-lasting. Fibreglass contractors also claim it solves the problem of leaking roofs because it "doesn't crack like felt does". However, fibreglass DOES crack, sometimes very badly, and this also ignores the fact that there are plenty of other flat roofing materials available beyond just felt and fibreglass, some of which offer significantly better performance than either of them.

The first point to understand is that fibreglass does NOT allow for significant amounts of contraction and expansion (a natural phenomenon on any roof), meaning that repeated temperature changes, moisture, freezing and heating WILL cause fibreglass to crack over time. Usually, this results in people making piecemeal repairs as they go along, replacing fibreglass sections on an as-and-when, ad hoc basis, eventually resulting in the classic "patchwork quilt" effect so often seen on fibreglass roofs. Multiple repairs such as this also undermine the overall weatherproofing and integrity of the roof, allowing water ingress through joins and seams.

As you might imagine, there aren't many jointless, seamless roofing options on the market! However, this is exactly what polymer roofing is and does - it is:

  • Jointless and seamless
  • Extremely flexible both to apply ("perfect forming" around details) and when it comes to expansion and contraction
  • Weatherproof, waterproof, windproof, UV-proof, fireproof and theftproof
  • Long-lasting, with a range of warranties available
  • Available in various colours, including coloured quartzes, patinated copper and lead alternative
  • Affordable and quick to install UK wide
