Things to Consider Before you Buy Corrugated Metal Sheets or Box Profile Roofing

Are you considering corrugated or box profile metal roof sheeting for a roofing project that needs to be strong, long-lasting and affordable?

Corrugated metal roofing is a popular option in the UK, especially for buildings such as workshops, village halls and sheds. Rightly, it's viewed as affordable, light, tough and simple. Roofs can also be plastic coated for additional water resistance and have reasonable longevity provided rust can be avoided.

However, it also suffers several drawbacks that should be factored in:

  • Cut ends are prone to rust
  • Poor contraction and expansion, meaning joints and fixings can be damaged by extremes of weather
  • They are very difficult to shape around roof details and protrusions (hence they tend only to be used on simpler roofs)
  • Replacing damaged panels can be disruptive
  • They lack resistance to high winds, which are likely to cause lift-stress, which in turn damage underlying fixings

We are always being told extreme weather events will increase, so by definition for a roof to be long-lasting, it has to take this into account. It is our belief that metal sheet & corrugated roofing (including box profile sheets) do not, so that in the long term they present a false economy.

Polymer roofing is not only one of the most affordable roofing options on the market, it also suffers NONE of the above drawbacks (this is why we use it - we have experienced many different roofing systems and if something else worked better, we would use that!).

  • No metal components to rust - polymer roofing is one of the fiew industries that resuses spent plastic particles, preventing them being dumped into the oceans
  • Excellent contraction and expansion, minimising stress on joints and fixes.  Polymer roofing is not only UV proof and waterproof, it is also fireproof and theftproof
  • Exceptionally flexible and "perfect forming" around details and protrusions, no matter how many or how strangely shaped
  • Replacing the roof is so non-disruptive, it can be carried out without even asking people working below to move somewhere else! We can do this with no mess or hassle even on hard-to-access roofs
  • Wind cannot lift the polymer coating from its substrate, again minimising stress on joints and fixings underpinning the roof
  • Polymer roofing is also quick to install, UK wide, strong, long-lasting and can even be used as traditional looking alternative to copper and lead roofing. We also offer an insurance-backed warranty which (unusually!) can be transferred to the future owner should you decide to move and are fully accredited by many leading quality assurance organisations including Construction Line, National Federation of Roofing Contractors, Proteus, Sika and Tor.

These are only a few of the multiple advantages of polymer roofing - for more see our dedicated section - or simply follow the links around the website for more information - you might want particularly to check Futureproof Roof, Copper Roof Alternative, Lead Roof Alternative, and the Home page. There are also portfolio pages so that you can see, in advance, examples of how finished polymer roofs look.
