This porch canopy in Kidwelly (SA16 / SA17) was in desperate need of replacement as a result of continual lead theft.

Leadwork on higher roofs is frequently stolen but the easier, lower reach of this canopy had made it especially attractive to thieves.

For a small area, this required an unusual amount of work as the entire canopy needed to be constructed from scratch. The forming and construction work of this 13ft wild canopy was timber-intensive, using 15 lengths of treated 4 x 2 and 7+ sheets of ply. The whole project took five days to complete but was very pleasurable to do!

As the photos show, there was a need to keep the finished look in keeping with the aesthetic of the building.

We are highly experienced at installing both copper alternative and lead alternative polymer roofs – which we do to exacting standards. Polymer roofing, which is also one of the few industries to reuse spent plastic particles, can mimic the traditional aesthetic excellently, hence its nickname "liquid lead" (with copper, the aesthetic is the aged, patinated 'verdi green' look).

A note on costs:

Roofs are notoriously expensive to fix when they go wrong so polymer roofing can also bring significant savings for roof-owners:

  • The relative speed of installation means most jobs can be completed within a day, saving on labour costs
  • We can usually get to your roof quickly, wherever you are in the Uk, meaning the job is underway before it gets worse
  • When the roof eventually fails (20+ years) it chalks rather than cracking or lifting, meaning plenty of warning and no expensive leaks or treatments for water ingress (or loss of goods below)
  • In comparison to copper and lead, the materials are cheaper.
  • The finished polymer roof is theftproof, meaning no need for repeat roofing visits
  • The final roof is easy to insure (metal roofs can be almost impossible)
